Sutter Street took the city’s Merry and Bright Business award in 2024 and then again in 2025, so anyone who lives or runs a shop in the Historic District already has a well-lit street to live up to. Folsom Historic District Christmas light installation covers the houses on the old grid and the storefronts along Sutter, and every job gets planned by phone and from photos.

No HOA here, and what the city does review

There’s no homeowners association in the Historic District. Exterior renovations and modifications go through the city’s Historic District design review, but that process is about lasting changes to a building. The Historic District chapter of the municipal code doesn’t mention temporary or holiday lighting, and we found no date rule in it. We couldn’t search the separate design guidelines document, so if you’re planning something unusual on a commercial front, a quick question to the city’s planning staff is sensible.

In practice, you choose when the lights go on. Tell us the date at (916) 570-9568. Our method suits old buildings anyway. Everything hangs from clips and ties. Nothing is nailed, stapled or drilled into old wood, brick or trim, and in January it leaves without a mark.

    Sutter Street’s 2026 calendar

If you want your lights on while the street is busiest, these are the 2026 dates listed so far. The ice rink at 200 Wool Street opens November 7. The Historic Folsom Community Christmas Tree Lighting is listed for Friday, December 4, from 6 to 9 pm on Sutter Street. The Christmas Arts and Craft Fair fills the 600 to 900 blocks of Sutter on Sunday, December 6. Event schedules can change, so check with the organizers. If you’d like to be lit ahead of the tree lighting, call (916) 570-9568 early and we’ll look for a day that works.

Folsom Historic District Christmas light installation on older homes

Houses here are older, individual and nothing like a tract, which is why photos matter so much. Send the front straight on, each side you can see from the street, the porch, and every outdoor outlet you know of. Older homes sometimes have only one or two, and that decides how we split the power.

In the Figueroa and Persifer-Dean subareas the trees are mature and the houses vary from lot to lot. A roofline on a small older house needs a light hand: the eaves and the front gable, lit cleanly, usually say enough. Porches are where these homes do best. Pillar wraps on porch posts, lit garland along the railing and over the door, and a lit wreath on the gable or the door itself suit the age of the house. One home on Persifer Street entered the city’s lights contest in 2025, so the neighbors are paying attention.

Mature trees wrap well. We wind the trunk and the main limbs and fasten with ties, never staples into bark. Close to Sutter Street the lots get small, so stake lighting is used sparingly: a short line along the front path, kept clear of the sidewalk. On the old grid and along Riley Street, we work out where the truck and ladders go before install day.

If your lot sits out toward the Lake Natoma edge of the district, tell us whether one side of the house faces open ground. It may deserve as much light as the front.

We cover the rest of the city too (see our Folsom page), including American River Canyon, which also borders Lake Natoma.

    Storefronts, balconies and brick

The Sutter Street storefronts are brick, many with balconies above the sidewalk. Garland on the balcony rail, wreaths between the upper windows and a roofline along the top edge are the usual pieces. We attach with ties and clips sized to the railing, and we don’t put fasteners into historic brick. Shop owners can read more on our commercial lighting page. Or call (916) 570-9568 between customers.

How the job runs after you call

We agree the plan and the quote from your pictures, texted or uploaded on the contact page. On install day we arrive with the lights, hang them and set a timer. If a section goes out mid-season, ring (916) 570-9568 and a repair gets scheduled.

Come January we take everything down and remove it, so there’s nothing for you to store.

Before you book in Folsom Historic District

Is there an HOA in the Folsom Historic District?

No. The district is governed by city design review for exterior changes, not a homeowners association, and the city’s Historic District code chapter doesn’t address temporary holiday lights.

Will Folsom Historic District Christmas light installation damage an old house?

We use clips and ties only. Nothing is nailed, stapled or drilled into old wood, brick or trim, and everything is removed in January.

My house has very few outdoor outlets. Is that a problem?

It’s common on older homes. Photograph the outlets you have and we’ll plan the layout and timer around them.

Do you light businesses on Sutter Street?

Yes. Balcony garland, wreaths and roofline lights are planned the same way, by phone and photos, and attached without fasteners in the brick.

Can my lights be up in time for the tree lighting?

Call early and tell us that’s the goal. The 2026 tree lighting is listed for Friday, December 4, and we’ll look for an install day ahead of it.
